This course will examine the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from the emergence of Jewish and Arab nationalisms in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to the contentious situation of the present day. Topics will include the British mandate for Palestine, the development of Israeli political and social institutions, the rise of Palestinian national consciousness, the impact of outside powers on the conflict, and the prospects for a lasting resolution. Attention will also be devoted to the divisions within the Israeli and Palestinian communities between those who put primacy in the democratic decisions of their nations and those who would yield to a higher divine law. The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is one of the most bitterly contested struggles of our time. In the interests of objectivity, and as a way of honing critical reading and thinking skills, attention will be devoted to a broad spectrum of ideological and political opinion. Students are expected to participate actively in several scheduled discussions.
